Step One:
Determine what type of swing you have. (or want to have)

There are two types of golf swing and every golfer either has one or the other.  To determine what type of swing you have we must first understand the differences between the one-plane and two-plane golf swings.  They are completely different and it is absolutely necessary to your imrovement and understanding of the golf swing to know which category you belong.  Golf instruction is not universal and must be tailored to your particular swing type.  Unfortunately, many instructors do not think this way and advice for one swing, as you will discover here, is not advice consistent for another swing type.  Okay if you are confused don't be, we are going to slowly go through some key points so that you can determine if you are a one-planer or a two-planer.

One-Plane

The "one" refers to a single plane that is made by the shoulders and the left arm(for a right-handed golfer).  A true one-planer will have their left arm fairly parallel to line drawn from shoulder to shoulder at the top of their backswing.

As you can see in this picture, this golfer is wrapping his arms around his body rather than lifting them up, a clear indicator of a one plane swing. Notice how the plane of his left arm is virtually identical to the plane that his shoulders are turning on(designated by the redline).  Hence the term "one"-plane because the shoulders and arms are moving along a single plane without any separation.

 Two-Plane

The "two" refers to two separate planes, one that the shoulders follow and another(steeper) plane the the arms will travel along.  A two-planer turns the shoulders around while lifitng the arms up onto a second plane.  At the top of the two-planers backswing, the left arm will not be parallel to the shoulders but lifted a higher.

Notice in this picture the clear difference between the plane of the shoulders with that of the left arm.  The left arm is on a steeper plane while the shoulders turn or a fairly shallow plane.  Here you can clearly observe "two" separate planes that the shoulders and arms are following at the top of the backswing.
